Christmas Traditions - Old and New

We Survived. Our first Christmas away from home, with no extended family. We survived and actually had a wonderful time celebrating in our new home in London.  To solve the hole- in the- belly pain of missing our family like crazy, we brought some traditions from home here to London to cure our home-sickness and started some new traditions of our own based on English traditions.

Warning Readers: This is going to be a long post. We celebrated Christmas with all our might, so there are lots (and lots!) of pictures and comments to note. Being that this is probably going to be our first and only Christmas away from home, we want to capture every bit so that when we are exhausted by the numerous amount of family events next year  surrounded by our loving family in years to come, we can look back at our little English Christmas in jolly 'ol London as a family of four.

New London Tradition - Family Carol Service at St. Paul's Cathedral
We stood in the rain for an hour, then waited inside for another hour to take part in the singing of carols in the famous St. Pauls Cathedral. We were soaked ( lost the umbrella), exhausted from chasing two toddlers around and hungry - but it was worth it. How often can you say you went to a Christmas  service at St. Paul's cathedral? To top it all off, we met up with our Columbus/London friends The Browns and got to enjoy it with them!

Avery and Caroline
Avery practicing her Virgin-Mary like skills rocking her baby
(Lane was not pleased with me allowing her to venture off to this roped off area of the chapel to take this shot! I'll do anything for a cute pic of my girl)

Tradition from Home: Bundling up to see Christmas lights
At home we go to the Columbus Zoo, here in London we go to Tralfagar square to see giant trees lit up and hear carolers. Though the zoo and the public square are very different, at this time of year both are crowded, cold and at the end of the night you think to yourself "okay, we survived it", so we felt right at home.

The Flood family having a picnic while listening to carolers.

Watching the carolers ( they were AWFUL!)
As any true toddler in London or home in Columbus - tantrums are inevitable.

Tradition from Home: Getting Dressed up for Christmas Eve Church Service
As always, we got in our fancy Church clothes, had the traditional "Let's just watch mass on TV"(Lane), "Don't brush my hair!!!"(Avery), "bah, blah, cry arch back in pain- meaning I'm sick of being stuck in my stroller"(Stella), "Fine, then we just won't go- tears"(Lo) fights, and headed to Church. We hiked uphill to get to our new church, chased the kids around throughout the 45 minutes, and were way overdressed for the 3pm casual service.

We recently found this path that gives us a more direct path to our church. It is super sweet, and didn't  the family look cute hiking up in their fancy-clothes?
As we always do at home in front of the Mavko tree - we took our traditional Christmas eve picture by our super small tree in our church clothes...I think it's one of the best we've ever gotten.

New London Tradition: Jesus' Birthday Party Poppers.
We decided that typical Christmas traditions were too stuffy for Jesus' birthday party... so we lightened it up a little and celebrated with some loud, colorful, messy fun poppers. The girls had a blast, Lane cringed at the mess we made (which made Lo laugh) and at the end of it we all decided it is a tradition we will carry on for many years to come.

Tradition from Home: Packing on the Holiday pounds.
We grocery shopped, we ate, we drank, we ate, we ate.... and come New Year's we will be making those typical " I'm never eating again" resolutions.

Something new to this portion of the Holiday was that I had to cook - rather than being spoiled by both of our families doing the hard work. As you can see, Lane did his part by keeping me stocked up on wine and Champagne.
Mom's Cheezy squares ( she made them while visiting us earlier in December...but I popped them in the oven so I stole the credit for their delicious-ness).
Chicken and Noodles. Mom always makes Chicken Noodle soup on Christmas eve, and Aunt Dorothy makes Chicken and Noodles on Christmas day. My version ended up being an exact compromise between the two versions which made us think of both wonderful ladies.

New London Tradition: Crackers
For the entire month before December 25th I thought the adorable wrapped packages sold at every store around were edible crackers wrapped in Christmas paper (ignorant American I am). To my delight, we found out that these crackers were actually for enjoying with friends and family and "cracking" the wrapping apart to find what small happy-meal like toy and crown are inside. We will be talking about these crackers for years to come.... and hopefully can find some in the states to keep the tradition going.

The tradition is to hand a cracker to another as a "season's greetings" type of gesture and each person pulls from each side.

When broken apart, you find a small trinket and a paper crown to adorn on your head.

Tradition from Home: Elves, Santa, and Spoiled Children
I have told my sister numerous times that I will never bring the "elf on the shelf" tradition to my house, that I will never be the crazy Santa Mom and that my children WILL NOT be spoiled at Christmas - instead they will understand the reason for the season and will grow up thinking of Christmas only as a time for family, friends and Jesus...... I can hear my sister laughing at me from across the pond. The elves and Santa came, spoiled the girls and left us in a flat full of toys.

The elves that spy on you arrived and were immediately loved by Avery. Max and Hero arrived in new places around the house each morning to spy on the girls and report back to Santa.
We wrapped up the key for Santa to get in our back door ( no easily-accessible fireplace in our flat)
Left the key for Santa and veggies for Rudolph outside
Under the tree went the plate of cookies for Santa ( Stella didn't like the fact that the fat guy in the suit got multiple cookies)

The girls under the tree in their Christmas jammies
 Santa came!!!
 Favorite gifts

The holiday was magical for us all, but now is the aftermath. Avery is disappointed daily when she wakes up to find an empty room and keeps asking why Santa didn't come. Stella is constantly annoyed that Avery has stolen all of her gifts ( yes, even the Dinosaur pictured above), and Lane and I are sick of picking up all of the crap wonderfully generous gifts Santa left. We are still shoving our faces with as many sweets and junk food as possible in anticipation of that dreaded January 1st when we must give it all up.

Hoping your Christmas was as memorable as ours,

The Flood Family

Happy Holidays - Please keep in touch in 2013!

(Pretend you are walking inside from your mailbox and ripping open a (very expensive of course) beautiful Christmas card full of perfect pictures of our girls and our extravagant travels around Europe and wishing you ….)

Happy Holidays from The Floods!

(The perfect card is not coming… as this city we are in now is expensive, our kids won’t smile for a picture and I am ashamed that travel for us means heading to the Chipotle a few miles away as a fancy Friday night on the town)

We are doing great and adjusting to London well. Lane is enjoying work and has been busy working late hours already, and Lauren and the girls spend a lot of daily time packing and unpacking the stroller from adventures around the city to parks, museums and shopping . Avery has learned to ride her scooter all around the city and Stella is finally walking! We have fallen in love with London.

We want to know more about what is going back home with all of you, so here is our contact info – we have many ways to keep in touch so no excuses!

Our Address:
236 Finchley Road
Flat C
London, UK NW3 6DJ

House Phone Number :(Vonage, Internet based phone – but a local Columbus area code so no expense to call us!)

* this # won’t work until mid January when our broadband internet finally gets installed – utilities here have been quite the struggle)

Lauren Cell Phone # : +44 (0)745 039 6068, so from the US it is 011 44 745 039 6068

Nanny and We-Pa: Our First Visitors!

It's been a while since I've blogged, as we've officially hosted our first visitors in London!  Instead of snuggling up with my MacBook at night to update the two people who read Flood family blog fans on our whereabouts and happenings, we've been sight seeing, drinking lots of beer and playing Euchre with my parents the last week or so.  They arrived on the 8th and they are all gone as of this morning. The time went too fast, was too fun, and I was begging my Mom on her way out today to book the next trip soon.

Top 10 Most Memorable moments and facts about Nanny and We-Pa's First Visit to London:

10. We discovered that 9 oz beers ( typical bottled beers here in England) don't last long when my Dad's in town. We all felt that we could drink all day long more frequently since he was here on vacation, and the small beers warranted us double the quantity.
9. We got to ride the London Eye for the first time and get a better view of the city we are falling in love with.
Dad's self portrait - this city is a "photographer's" heaven:

8. My Dad can't even survive a few hours without internet connection... He doesn't check on work email, need to post status updates, pictures or tweets, he just needs to know that the internet is working on as many devices as he brought with him, and he brings a lot.....Okay, so maybe the rest of us are the same way ( that is 1 MacBook, 1 iPad, 1 iPhone, 1 iPod and 1 inferior Android-something phone in this picture...a pictured captured by the second iPhone we had in the house).

7. The girls haven't lost their love for swimming since the pool closed last summer. We were lucky in that for a few days Mom and Dad stepped away from our flat to get the heck away from the chaos a different view of London, to a wonderful Marriott hotel in the heart of it all with a pool! So the girls and I knocked on their door one morning and took a dip! We had a great time swimming in the luxurious pool - and even ticked off some old grouchy British women who weren't so thrilled with Avery's cannon balls she was practicing in the pool.

6. I've realized how much I miss my Mommy. I miss the tea she makes me, the fact that my girls beg and plead for her to take care of them rather than me, her one and only rude comeback she has in her ( flipping her middle finger with a cute smile on her face and red cheeks), and really just having her around to help. While she was here I read a book ( off of her Kindle of course so I didn't have to pay for it), took an hour long bath, went on numerous trips around town by myself, took a jog without pushing my huge double stroller up and down hills, and got to go on a date for an entire day with my husband. She's a saint.

5. Stella doesn't walk - She runs! She must have been saving up all of her skills to show off to her grandparents, because during their visit she went from toddling around 5 steps maximum to going all over the place, and quickly. It was great to have Mom and Dad here to see how she got going in such a short time!

4. London knows how to do Christmas - London doesn't celebrate "the Holidays", they celebrate Christmas. They say "Merry Christmas" and have jolly festivals, decorations and events all over the city to lavishly celebrate the Christmas season. We found a few festivals around town filled with shopping, kids rides, Santas, snowmen and even a carousel bar! ( No body said that they make sure that Jesus is the reason for the season... it's more of a pagan tradition based Christmas!)

The best part of this bar was that Avery liked to look at the horsey-cocktail table tops....while the rest of us bought beers:

 (Stella's first kids ride!):
Avery has missed the suburban-Santa blow ups from years' past at home... So she needed to give Santa a squeeze:
Princess Avery ( She's been really into the Cinderella movie, so she talked about this ride for days after!)
Stella loves any adventure where she can get out of her stroller and explore (or try to steal things from inanimate objects)
3. You can see more, and take great photographs with two extra adults around. We got to see so much that we hadn't been able to see yet since Mom and Dad were here to help with the girls. Just look at some of the pictures my Dad took! ( He will be mad that I posted these, as I am sure he will be editing, cropping and touching up to make them perfect for weeks when he gets settled back at home).
Avery has been dying to get in a traditional phone booth, and we waited til Nanny got here so WePa could get the pictures:
Abbey Road cross walk from the Beatles Album cover. Since this really is just a cross walk on a busy street in a quiet neighborhood, you feel silly doing " the walk", but others were doing it so we went for it!
 Abbey Road Studios:
The front gate to the Queen's house:
 Union Jack!
 Nice Shot We-Pa!
Avery was crazy about this talking tree at a Christmas festival, and We-Pa got a great picture for her!

2. We don't Need no Stinkin Boys - we have girl power! Over the last few weeks of putting cabinets and tables together in our new flat, the girls and I have coined this the official motto of our house (we've done it all while Lane was at the office). Well, Mom and I continued the motto as we officially won the week-long euchre tournament against Lane and Dad. We don't need no boys to win!

1. Just because we are across the pond, doesn't mean our parent's won't spoil us rotten. From Christmas gifts, to specialities from home, from buying carts full of beer to fancy dinners....Nanny and We-Pa showed us a great time in our now home city. We are so thankful for their generosity in taking the time away from work and money to come all the way here to visit us.

With everything going on in the world around us from holiday celebrations to disturbing news stories back home, it was great having a slice of home here with us for the week and we look forward to hosting them again.......now I have to put down my computer and start preparing and planning for our next visitors as the Floods come to Hotel Lane and Lauren in 8 days - time to stock up the bottles of wine for that week!

Going Royal

Enough is enough, we've been here for 3 weeks now and we needed to do some sight seeing. We decided that we needed to make it official that we were in a land of a royal presence by going to see "the queen's house", the "marching band" and "the carriages like Cinderella". So we....

Headed to Buckingham Palace:

Front Gate

The Victoria Memorial

Our Dream Home

Saw the Guards Band march in for the changing of the guards:
( Avery watching the band in her scooter-helmet)

A few pics of changing of guards ceremony. Avery got to see a little from my shoulders, but these pictures are me sticking my camera up in the air to hope to get a decent shot ( which I obviously did a lousy job at)

Then finished our Royal morning by heading to the Royal Garage, the Royal Mews, to see some carriages and Rolls Royce:

The Mews house

A Royal Carriage... there were about 10 on display, all with different origins and meanings, but they all looked the same to us
The Mews had a great 'kids break' room that allowed us to have the girls sit down, do some coloring of their own fair-tale dream carriages and unwind a little
The Gold State Coach used for coronations and extra-special royal events ( Avery got really close to this one, as she ducked under the velvet fence to get a close up)
A Royal Rolls Royce limosine.. Not sure if this was Kate Middleton's ride to her wedding...but very similar and very impressive.... they have raised the ceiling on the limo so the Queen can stand inside of the car!)

After a great touristy-trip, we headed home to our flat a little more educated about the monarchy, and very jealous of the luxuries.
